Net, the bar is very high. We want the best-of-the-best by function but the FDE role in particular
needs to be people who are adaptable, hungry and high-slope.
As to how we’re viewing it as different from traditional SWEs:

Client-facing vs. Product development. FDEs work directly with clients; traditional
engineers typically have limited client exposure. FDEs require strong communication and
adaptability to manage client relationships and expectations.
On-site vs. Office based. FDEs often work on-site with clients, which requires high
empathy for their problems. Traditional engineers primarily work in the office or remotely
and focus more on teamwork.

Problem decomposition vs. Iterative development. FDEs are expected to break down
problems in real-time, while traditional engineers may follow iterative development
processes (sprints, testing, debugging).
Customization vs. Generalized software. FDEs tailor solutions to specific client needs
using pre-existing tools (“one customer, many capabilities”); traditional engineers
develop new software or features (“one capability, many customers”).
Domain expertise vs. Technical expertise. Both roles require deep technical
knowledge, but FDEs need more versatility across multiple systems and industries.
FDEs often develop domain-specific expertise, while traditional engineers focus more on
technical specializations.
