About the Role

Building upon Reverse ETL’s ability to use SQL to sync to any SaaS tool, Customer Studio is Hightouch’s second major product that provides a purpose-built no-code suite of features that enables anyone, regardless of their SQL experience, to activate data directly from their warehouse. Despite being a small team (3 engineers, 1 PM, 1 designer), Customer Studio is our fastest growing product and already accounts for nearly half of our revenue, which also gives this role the potential to have significant impact!

We’re looking to add a product-minded backend engineer to the team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable diving deep into backend and distributed systems and think holistically about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and reliability. We also are looking for someone with strong customer and product thinking and who feels comfortable writing and engaging with product specs.

Some of the problems we’ll be working on include:

Data Warehouse Performance: We’re consistently pushing the limits of what data warehouses can handle in terms of speed, performance, and interactivity. We explore optimizations generally (e.g. optimizing queries, storing pre-computed state), as well as investigate warehouse-specific improvements.
Analytics and Experimentation: How can Hightouch help customers build segments and decide what data they want to sync? How can we facilitate experimentation to downstream tools, including tracking the performance of different audiences?
Real-time Audience Syncing: Our users are always interested in faster syncing and fresher data. As warehouses become more real-time and adopt technologies like CDC, we’re excited to explore real-time audience computation and syncing.
Generative AI: We’re continuously working on making the user experience of acting on data more seamless, and are optimistic generative AI can enhance user workflows.

We are looking for talented, intellectually curious, and motivated individuals who are interested in tackling the problems above. This is a senior role, but we focus on impact and potential for growth more than years of experience. The salary range for this position is $170,000 - $240,000 USD per year, which is location independent in accordance with our remote-first policy.

Interview Process

Our interview process focuses on evaluating fit for the most important dimensions of the role: product sense, ability to architect backend and distributed systems, and alignment with Hightouch’s values. Notably, we don’t do any programming interviews as we believe they are low signal to noise and aren’t a good evaluation mechanism.

System Design Screen [60m]: Designing a feature end-to-end, including touching the database, API, web frontend, and data warehouse.

Our tech

We have a fully serverless backend built on top of AWS, consisting of a collection of Go microservices. We use React/Typescript to build client applications across web, desktop, and mobile. We create our own RAG pipelines.

Day in the life

As the founding engineer, every day you’ll need to build fast and well with a laser focus on customer impact. Here’s a typical day:

9:30 AM. Lead a call with a managing partner at a law firm (“KAJ Law”) that recently started using PointOne. They ask if our system integrates with Slack, but it does not. After the call, you draft a plan for the new feature—depending on the priority, you might target a same-day turnaround.
11:27 AM. As we’re working, we see that we’re running into a capacity issue causing a slowdown for some users. All hands on deck to figure out what’s going on and resolve the issue.
2:43 PM. Slack communication feature is complete. Deploy new code and email the team at KAJ Law to let them know about the new capability.
3:00 PM. Lead a new-customer onboarding call, taking note of the user’s reaction to the product.
5:45 PM. Team dinner. We chat about life, news, work, etc.
6:23 PM. With the big hurdles of the day overcome, time to go heads down to architect the intelligence layer on our new analytics product.

We are looking for a senior frontend-leaning fullstack engineer eager to take over large swaths of our greenfield product roadmap. As one of our early senior hires, you will partner closely with our founders on the direction of our product and drive business-critical technical decisions. 2. **Discovery**. Writing is scattered across millions of websites, newspapers, magazines, and books. Perch will index it all and show you exactly what you want to read, before you even knew you wanted to read it.
3. **Ease of use**. Highlighting, picking up where you left off, audio, summarizing, themes, fonts, adjustable text sizes, and bookmarking should all be seamless. And if your grandma can't figure out how to do it, it's too hard!

A few dozen people are already using it almost every day even though we just released it to the app store a few weeks ago and have done very little to promote it. Our sole focus right now is getting the product to organic exponential growth solely via word of mouth. Some people are sharing it with friends already, but it’s not quite there yet.

**The Role**

This founding engineer role would be our first hire, and we’re in the process of setting up an office in NYC. This role is 100% in-person, and we only plan on hiring people who are so smart/amicable that you’d go into the office on a Sunday just to hangout with them.

We’re looking for somebody who is obsessed with coding and loves hard engineering problems. Aptitude is more important than experience, in our view.

The problem you will be working with us to solve is:

1. Index all of the blogs and newsletters on the Internet with perfect formatting (You would not believe much bad HTML there is out there)
2. Build an article recommendation engine. Of the millions of articles on the Internet, can we show users the best possible thing for them to read at any given moment as soon as they open the app?
3. Scrape, ingest, and organize third-party and meta data to improve those recommendations. Internal backlinks is one obvious example and Google’s core insight — if Paul Graham links to a blog post, it’s probably pretty good. But we’ll also want to leverage external backlinks (e.g. The New York Times) and other useful third-party data (e.g. how many people shared this article on X or Reddit?). And of course our own reading data (e.g. Did readers finish this article? Did they click on it? Did they share it? Did they bookmark it?).

Our backend is written in Node.js but we generally believe that languages can be learned. Again, we believe that aptitude is more important than experience.

We built this blog called the [Startup Archive](https://www.instagram.com/startuparchive_/) that has hundreds of thousands of followers across Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Threads, and newsletter.

It began as a way to dogfood our product and put ourselves in the shoes of people who write on line, but it has grown into this incredible distribution asset that can help share Perch with the millions of people it reaches per month.

We haven’t promoted Perch yet though. We’re waiting until the product is good enough to grow organically through word of mouth before pouring gasoline on it.
