This includes individual contributor responsibilities such as owning all things product design and user research. But you will also be responsible for building a design culture of incredibly exacting craftsmanship. If the design of Perch isn’t world-class, the probability of us serving a billion users is zero.We are biased, but we genuinely believe this is one of the most exciting design opportunities in tech. **What is Perch?**

Perch is the first reading app for the Internet — all of your blogs and newsletters in one place. As more writing moves online, we believe this will comprise an increasingly larger percentage of all reading activity, and over time, we will be the #1 reading application/product in the world.

We ([Mike](https://x.com/mikemcg0) & [Matt](https://x.com/mattmcguin)) also believe that removing friction from the reading experience will expand the market for blogs and newsletters from mostly chronically online people today (where do you find blogs/newsletters if you’re not on X or Reddit?) to the 5+ billion people connected to the Internet.

**The Role**

This founding design engineer role will be one of first three hires, and we’re in the process of setting up an office in NYC. This role is 100% in-person, and we only plan on hiring people who are so smart/amicable that you’d go into the office on a Sunday just to hangout with them.

We’re looking for somebody who is obsessed with design and loves bringing those designs to life with code. If you’re an exceptionally talented designer but don’t code, that could still work if you’re willing to learn (we’re more than happy to teach you frontend development — it’s not that hard!). Aptitude is more important than experience, in our view.

In this role, your sole responsibility will be to design and help build the most beautiful reading app in the world.

The promise of the Internet was to make us smarter. It gave billions of people access to the world’s knowledge in a pocket-sized device.

Yet we rarely feel smarter after using it. It usually just feels like a waste of time.

The problem is the internet has gotten incredibly good at giving you what you want—even when what you want isn’t necessarily good for you. If you can’t look away from a car crash, it will assume you want more car crash videos and show them to you.

Perch will fix this. It might not be as entertaining as TikTok, but you’ll feel better about yourself after using it. Kind of like going to the gym.

And the easier we make it to read, the more people will do it — kind of like how you’ll eat more cookies if somebody brings a plate of them into the office for everyone to share.

- **Passion for great design:** you create product experiences that are beautiful and functional (with the portfolio to show for it), with an eye and for clean visual aesthetics optimized for user experience.
